A Bathing Ape, or BAPE as it is sometimes known, is the brainchild of a Japanese designer known as Nigo. An elusive personality, Nigo keeps his real name, age and just about everything else a closely guarded secret. A close friend of Undercover’s Jun Takahashi, whom he met while studying fashion at the Bunka Academy in 1988, they collaborated together before setting up their respective companies. Nigo started his label in 1993 with a run of limited edition T-shirts featuring simian imagery. Today A Bathing Ape is one of the most sought-after street labels by a select cognoscenti from Tokyo to New York.
